Namibia Study Abroad Texas A&M University & Natural Destinations

IT'S TIME FOR AFRICA

In 2016 I attended a four-week study abroad that took me to South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Spending most of our time in Namibia, I learned photography and fell in love with the culture. I created the 2016 video after I got home and recruited for the program because of my pure passion for the experience.

In 2018, faculty leaders of the trip at Texas A&M and the Namibian in-country partner (Natural Destinations) asked me to take on a leadership role on the trip. My job is to recruit students, aid in planning and attend the trip to facilitate during the 15-day trip in May.

This non-traditional role led me to create tailored communication materials with the goal of recruiting students and communicating to external stakeholders. Recruiting manifested in videos, graphic design and social media management. Part of my facilitation involved creating an information booklet to pair with the trip.

Namibia, 2019

Namibia is nestled in the southern hemisphere of the African continent. This extraordinary place is home to the world's oldest desert, over seven indigenous tribes, and stunning wildlife.

I have had the pleasure of co-facilitating a Texas A&M University study abroad to Namibia through the Agriculture Leadership, Education and Communications department.

This video was made to both record the trip for the students who attended, and recruit for the next year's trip.

Namibia, 2016

This video was made after I attended the TAMU Namibia study abroad in the summer of 2016. It was made to recruit for study abroad as per a scholarship project, and to record memories for the trip.

In order to better illustrate the Namibia study abroad experience, I recorded 360 footage and edited it to create mini-virtual reality experiences. These VR videos can be viewed with a phone, on a Google Cardboard or in a VR headset. The experiences have proven successful in both recruiting future participants, and allowing others to view the Namibia trip from afar.

Below are examples of my social media recruitment. I used the official department account to post tailored graphic media and text to drive students to the application website.

GETTING SOCIAL

GETTING SOCIAL

These graphics aided social posts as visuals, and displayed on the department's television to target students within the department.
